QUEBEC LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCI) DATABASE PROJECT

What is the Quebec LCI database?

Worldwide environmental concern has led to an increase in demand for greener products and services. Life cycle tools that assess the impacts of products throughout their life cycle (from cradle-to-grave) are now being used to provide reliable environmental product information to policy-makers and stakeholders. Among the most widely used are Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and carbon footprints (life cycle GHG emissions). These tools can present a non-tariff barrier to trade for countries lacking the infrastructure required to provide life cycle information on their products and services.

To help the Canadian and Quebec government and industry meet this challenge, the Interuniversity Research Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services (CIRAIG) has developed a high-quality and comprehensive life cycle inventory (LCI) database, a cornerstone upon which all LCAs and other life cycle tools are built.

The database will facilitate the LCA process for organizations, products, technologies and services in Canada. Up to now, the process has required using foreign generic databases and adapting data piece by piece, a long and costly operation. In practical terms, the project's main aim is to adapt one of the largest LCA databases in the world, ecoinvent, to the Quebec and Canadian context.
